A Dedicated Rainwater Supply for the Property
Our team attended a property in Mount Riverview NSW 2774 to install a new 3,000-litre rainwater tank and pumped roof sprinkler system as an additional measure for ember defence.
The project involved capturing roof water, storing it in the new tank and using dedicated pumps to supply a garden hose tap and five roof-mounted sprinklers.
Installing the 3,000L Rainwater Tank
A section of the existing brick pathway was removed and a new 100mm reinforced concrete slab constructed to provide a stable, level base for the tank.
Once the slab had cured, the 3,000L slimline rainwater tank was installed and selected downpipes were redirected into it.
A first-flush diverter and filter was added to help prevent the initial dirt and debris washed from the roof from entering the tank. The first-flush drain and tank overflow were then connected to the existing stormwater system.
Reusing the Existing Rainwater Pump
The property's existing rainwater pressure pump was relocated from the opposite side of the home and incorporated into the new system.
New copper pipework connected the tank and pump to a brass quarter-turn hose tap, allowing the stored rainwater to be used around the property.
Reusing the existing serviceable pump also avoided replacing equipment that could continue doing its job.
Adding Five Roof Sprinklers for Ember Defence
A separate Grundfos pressure pump was installed to supply the roof sprinkler system.
New 25mm copper pipework was run externally towards the roof, where five brass part-circle impact sprinkler heads were installed. A dedicated control valve allows the sprinkler system to be operated when required.
Once connected, the new pipework was securely supported and the complete system was tested and commissioned.
The roof sprinklers provide an additional ember-defence measure using stored rainwater. They should be considered one part of a broader bushfire preparedness plan rather than a guarantee of protection during a bushfire.
