Removing an Old Rainwater Tank & Updating Stormwater Connections – Willoughby
Rainwater tanks are a great way to reuse water around the home, but sometimes they reach the end of their useful life or no longer suit the property layout.
At this residential property in Willoughby, the existing rainwater tank system needed to be removed so the drainage and water supply connections could be reconfigured to suit the updated plumbing layout.
Older tanks can develop pump issues, connection faults, or simply take up valuable space. In other situations, renovations or landscaping changes require the stormwater system to be redesigned.
This project involved safely removing the tank and modifying the stormwater and water supply pipework so the property’s drainage system continued to function correctly.
These works fall within our broader Rainwater Tank Removal and Stormwater Alterations services.
Safely Isolating and Removing the Tank System
The first step was isolating the existing rainwater tank system. Before any removal work begins, the system must be drained and disconnected to prevent water discharge during the process.
We isolated the water supply connected to the tank and drained down the system. The rainwater pump was then disconnected and safely removed.
Once the tank and pump were fully isolated, the rainwater tank itself was cut up and removed from site. Cutting the tank into sections allows for safe removal, particularly when tanks are installed in tight access areas around homes.
Removing older tanks properly ensures surrounding drainage and water connections can be reconfigured without damaging existing plumbing infrastructure.
Modifying the Stormwater Drainage Layout
After the tank removal, the stormwater layout needed to be adjusted.
We supplied and installed new PVC pipework and fittings to modify the existing drainage system and restore proper water flow. When a rainwater tank is removed, the stormwater pipes that previously fed into the tank need to be redirected back into the property’s stormwater drainage network.
Ensuring the correct fall and connection points are maintained is critical so water can discharge properly during rainfall.
This portion of the project forms part of our broader Stormwater Drainage and Drainage Modifications services.
Altering Recycled and Drinking Water Connections
Rainwater tank systems often connect to both recycled water lines and drinking water supply systems, depending on how the property was originally designed.
To suit the updated configuration, we supplied and installed new PEX pipework and fittings to alter both recycled water and drinking water connections where required.
These adjustments ensure the plumbing system remains compliant and that potable and non-potable water lines remain correctly separated.
This type of work commonly forms part of Recycled Water Plumbing and Plumbing Renovations, particularly when rainwater systems are being removed or redesigned.
Testing and Commissioning the Updated System
Once the new pipework and connections were installed, the system was tested to confirm correct water flow and drainage performance.
Testing ensures that all stormwater connections are functioning properly and that the modified water supply lines are operating safely.
After confirming correct operation, the work area was cleaned, and all waste materials were removed from the site.
The property’s plumbing and drainage system is now operating correctly without the old rainwater tank infrastructure.
If you’re planning renovations or your rainwater tank system is no longer functioning properly, updating the stormwater and water connections ensures the property continues to drain correctly.
