Fixing a Failed Sewer Line with Full Drain Replacement – Earlwood
Sewer problems underground often develop slowly. The first signs might be slow drainage, recurring blockages, or unpleasant smells around outdoor drainage points. Over time, damaged or poorly graded sewer pipes can completely fail, preventing wastewater from flowing correctly away from the property.
At this residential property in Earlwood, the existing sewer drainage system had deteriorated and required major rectification. Sections of underground pipework were no longer functioning properly, and the system needed to be rebuilt to restore correct fall and flow toward the sewer connection.
This type of work falls within our broader Sewer Drain Replacement and Drainage Rectification services.
Accessing the Underground Sewer Line
To reach the damaged pipework, we first removed courtyard pavers located near the house connection point. These were carefully lifted and stored on site so they could be reinstated later.
From there, we excavated an approximately 11-metre trench to expose the sewer line as it exits the property. Excavation then continued for a further 21 metres through the grassed area adjacent to the driveway until reaching the final connection point.
Excavation works of this scale form part of our Excavation Plumbing services and allow underground drainage systems to be accessed safely without damaging surrounding structures.
Once exposed, the defective sewer pipework was removed and the trenches were cleaned out to prepare for installation of the new system.
Installing the New Sewer Drainage System
Before installing the new pipes, we carefully set out new levels from the house connection points to ensure the correct drainage gradient toward the sewer main.
Maintaining proper fall is critical for sewer systems. Without the correct slope, wastewater can pool in the pipe, leading to blockages and premature pipe failure.
We then supplied and installed new PVC Sewer Installation pipework throughout the trench. As part of the upgrade, the new system also included:
• New vent lines to improve system ventilation
• New gully traps to protect the property from sewer gases
All pipework was installed to current plumbing standards to ensure reliable long-term performance.
Safety, Monitoring and Quality Assurance
Because this was a large excavation project, temporary fencing and barricades were installed to maintain public and site safety during the works.
Skip bin hire was included to remove all excavation spoil and waste from site as the project progressed.
Throughout the job, we maintained a video and photographic diary of the works. This documentation provides a record of the installation process and the condition of the system during each stage.
Once the new sewer line was installed, a CCTV Drain Inspection was conducted as part of quality assurance. CCTV inspections allow us to verify the installation and confirm that the pipe alignment, connections, and drainage flow are correct.
To provide additional assurance, annual CCTV Drain Inspection checks have also been included for the next two years.
Completion and Certification
After testing and inspection were completed, the system was commissioned to confirm correct operation.
A Certificate of Compliance was issued upon completion of the works, confirming the new sewer system meets the required plumbing standards.
The property now has a fully replaced underground sewer line with correct drainage fall and improved reliability.
Major sewer issues can cause significant disruption if left unresolved. Early investigation and proper drainage rectification can prevent repeated blockages and long-term damage to your plumbing system.
If you’re experiencing ongoing sewer problems or recurring blockages, it may be time to have the system properly inspected.
