Sand, Crushed Pipes & Stormwater Failure – Asquith

Stormwater Drain Repairs & Investigation – Asquith

When stormwater systems fail, the signs often start small. Sand in pits. Minor pooling during heavy rain. Downpipes overflowing. But underground, the damage can be much bigger.

At this Asquith property, ongoing drainage issues were affecting both the building and the on-site detention (OSD) system. Sand infiltration, crushed pipework, and poor runoff control were contributing to stormwater failure.

Before starting repairs, we needed to properly diagnose the system.

Identifying the Cause with CCTV Inspection

The first step was a full CCTV Pipe Inspection. This allows us to see inside the stormwater lines and identify blockages, pipe damage, or collapsed sections without unnecessary excavation.

The inspection revealed:

  • Significant sand and debris buildup inside the pipes

  • Crushed PVC stormwater pipework near a plastic pit

  • A leaking outlet connection at the building corner

  • A drainage line from the plastic pit to the concrete pit requiring full replacement

  • Disconnected downpipes at the rear of the building discharging directly onto the ground

Uncontrolled runoff had caused ground erosion. That erosion allowed sand and debris to enter both the garden concrete pit and the OSD system in the garage.

This is a common chain reaction. Surface runoff leads to erosion. Erosion leads to sand infiltration. Sand builds up inside pipes. Pipes clog or collapse. The system eventually fails.

Excavation & Stormwater Drain Repairs

Once the issues were confirmed, we excavated two marked trench sections to expose the damaged PVC stormwater pipework.

Sections of pipe were removed to gain access, and new PVC drainage pipework was supplied and installed. We raised inspection openings to ground level to allow easier future maintenance access.

All new connections were concrete-encased to provide structural support and long-term durability. The pipework was supported and sparged with 8–10mm blue metal aggregate to ensure stability and correct drainage performance.

This portion of the work falls under our broader Stormwater Drain Repairs, Drain Repairs, and Pipe Replacement services.

Clearing Sand & Restoring Flow

With new pipework installed, we carried out high-pressure Drain Cleaning to remove significant sand and debris buildup within the remaining stormwater lines.

After cleaning, the system was tested and commissioned to ensure proper water flow and discharge into the stormwater network.

Because the OSD system had been impacted by sand infiltration, this project also ties into OSD Maintenance and proper stormwater management.

What Property Owners Should Watch For

Stormwater problems often show early warning signs. Look out for:

  • Sand building up in pits

  • Water pooling near downpipes

  • Erosion around foundations

  • Downpipes discharging onto soil instead of into drainage

  • Stormwater backing up during heavy rain

If left unresolved, crushed pipework and sand infiltration can lead to full system failure. In more severe cases, extensive excavation may be required as part of larger Drainage Solutions.

Early investigation using CCTV Pipe Inspection can prevent much larger repair costs later.

Final Testing & Reporting

We completed a written report outlining our findings and recommendations to prevent recurrence. The stormwater system was fully tested to confirm correct operation.

All rubbish was removed, and the site was cleaned upon completion.

The drainage system at this Asquith property is now structurally supported, cleared of debris, and operating correctly.

If you’re noticing signs of stormwater failure, early action can prevent property damage and expensive structural repairs.
