Sewer Repair & Pipe Relining Castle Hill

Combining Modern Pipe Relining with Traditional Sewer Repairs for the Best Long-Term Result

Our team attended a property in Castle Hill to carry out major sewer repair and drainage renewal works after sections of the underground sewer system had deteriorated. Rather than relying on a single repair method, the project combined traditional excavation with modern sectional pipe relining to restore the sewer while minimising unnecessary disruption to the property.

This approach allowed each section of the drainage system to be repaired using the method that made the most sense, providing a practical, long-term solution for the homeowner.

Every Sewer Problem Is Different

One of the biggest misconceptions homeowners have is that every damaged sewer pipe should either be dug up or relined.

In reality, every drainage system is different.

Some sections of pipe are easy to access and can be replaced efficiently with new PVC pipework. Other sections may run beneath houses, driveways, landscaping, or other structures where excavation would be expensive and disruptive.

A good drainage plumber doesn't start with a preferred repair method—they start by understanding the condition and location of the pipe before deciding on the most appropriate solution.

That's exactly what this project involved.

Sometimes Digging Is Actually the Better Option

Digging up the sewer plumbing

To access the damaged sewer line, a section of the concrete driveway was carefully removed before excavation commenced to approximately 600mm below ground level.

Once the defective pipework was exposed, damaged sections of the existing sewer were removed and replaced with new PVC drainage.

Because this section of the sewer was already accessible, replacement provided the most reliable long-term outcome. New PVC sewer pipework offers improved durability, smoother internal flow, and far better resistance to tree root intrusion than many older drainage materials.

A new raised inspection opening was also installed during these works, creating an easily accessible point for future maintenance and inspections.

The Small Upgrade That Makes Future Repairs Much Easier

Inspection openings are one of the most valuable additions that can be made during a sewer renewal project, yet they're often overlooked by homeowners.

An inspection opening provides direct access into the underground sewer system without the need for excavation.

If the drainage system ever requires maintenance in the future, plumbers can use this access point to:

  • Carry out CCTV drain camera inspections
  • Perform high-pressure water jetting
  • Clear blockages
  • Inspect the condition of the sewer
  • Diagnose drainage problems much more efficiently

Adding an inspection opening during sewer renewal works helps make future servicing faster, less invasive, and often far more cost-effective.

Why We Didn't Just Replace Everything

While the driveway section was best repaired through excavation, another section of sewer beneath the house presented a completely different challenge.

Excavating beneath an existing home can be significantly more disruptive, requiring access through confined spaces and potentially affecting surrounding structures.

Instead of removing large sections of flooring or carrying out unnecessary excavation, sectional pipe relining was chosen for this part of the project.

This allowed the damaged section to be repaired internally while leaving the surrounding structure largely undisturbed.

Building a New Pipe Inside the Old One

Pipe relining is one of the most innovative developments in modern drainage repairs.

After the damaged section had been prepared, specialised relining equipment was used to install an epoxy resin liner inside the existing sewer pipe.

Once inflated and cured, the resin bonded to the inside of the original pipe, creating a new structural lining that effectively becomes a pipe within a pipe.

The finished liner seals cracks, bridges damaged joints, and helps prevent future tree root intrusion while restoring the structural integrity of the sewer.

For many inaccessible sections of drainage, pipe relining provides an excellent alternative to extensive excavation.

A Combination of Old and New Techniques

This project is a great example of how modern sewer renewals rarely rely on just one repair method.

Instead, each section of the drainage system was repaired according to its condition and accessibility.

Where excavation was practical, new PVC pipework was installed.

Where excavation would have caused unnecessary disruption beneath the house, sectional pipe relining provided an effective trenchless repair.

By combining both techniques, the homeowner received a comprehensive sewer upgrade without replacing more of the system than necessary.

Building a Sewer Designed to Last

Following the repairs, all new pipework was supported using blue metal aggregate bedding to provide long-term stability and minimise future ground movement.

Connections between the new PVC drainage and existing infrastructure were concrete encased for additional protection before excavated areas were backfilled and the driveway reinstated to its original condition.

The entire sewer system was then tested and commissioned to confirm correct flow, watertight connections, and reliable operation before the site was cleaned and handed back to the homeowner.
