Solving a Stormwater Mystery with CCTV Inspection- Mount Colah

Finding the Cause of Stormwater Issues – Mount Colah Drainage Investigation
Stormwater problems rarely have a single obvious cause. Water pooling in the yard, slow drainage after rain, or runoff around the house can all be symptoms of deeper issues underground.
At this Mount Colah property, the homeowner was experiencing drainage concerns around the rear of the house. Before recommending any repairs, our team needed to properly investigate the existing stormwater system and understand how water was moving through the property.
Drainage work isn’t just about digging up pipes and replacing them. The first step is always diagnosis. That’s where a detailed Stormwater Drainage Inspection and Drainage Diagnostics come in.
Accessing the Underground Drainage System
To begin the investigation, we carefully removed sections of pavers around the property. These were stored safely on site so they could be reinstated later once the inspection work was complete.
With access created, we excavated trenches at several locations along the rear of the property. These trenches allowed us to expose sections of the underground drainage system and examine the surrounding ground conditions.
While the trenches were open, we inspected nearby brickwork and building footings to check for signs of water movement or erosion that could indicate long-term drainage issues.
Looking at the surrounding soil conditions is an important part of any Drainage Rectification investigation. Soil type, compaction, and water saturation can all influence how stormwater behaves underground.
Using CCTV Technology to Diagnose Drainage Problems
Once sections of the drainage system were exposed, we conducted a CCTV Drain Inspection.
CCTV drain cameras allow plumbers to inspect the inside of underground pipes without having to excavate the entire system. A specialised waterproof camera is fed through the pipe, transmitting live video back to a monitor above ground.
This technology provides valuable information about:
• Pipe condition
• Cracks or pipe deformation
• Blockages or debris buildup
• Incorrect connections
• Pipe depths and alignment
• Exact pipe location underground
For this Mount Colah property, the CCTV inspection helped determine the depth and layout of the stormwater pipework, as well as identifying the location of key connection points within the system.
Without CCTV inspection, plumbers would often be forced to dig multiple exploratory trenches just to find the pipe layout. Using a camera significantly reduces unnecessary excavation and allows us to pinpoint problems more accurately.
This step forms a core part of our CCTV Drain Inspection and Plumbing Investigation services.
Checking Drainage Levels and Ground Gradients
Another critical part of diagnosing stormwater issues is checking the fall of the drainage pipes.
Stormwater pipes rely on gravity. If the gradient is too flat, water moves slowly and debris can build up inside the pipe. If the fall is incorrect, water may even flow in the wrong direction.
During the inspection, we measured the drainage gradients and ground levels within the trenches to confirm whether the existing system had been installed with the correct fall.
Incorrect levels are one of the most common causes of recurring drainage issues, especially in older installations.
These measurements help determine whether the system needs minor rectification or full Drainage Rectification works.
Inspecting Roof Drainage Components
Stormwater problems don’t always start underground. Roof drainage can also play a role.
While on site, we inspected the property’s roof gutters and downpipes. Measurements were taken for sections that may require replacement or upgrades in order to improve stormwater flow into the underground drainage system.
Properly functioning gutters and downpipes are essential for directing water safely into the stormwater network.
Completing the Investigation
Once all inspections and measurements were completed, the trenches were carefully backfilled to restore the ground levels.
The previously removed pavers were then reinstalled and matched as closely as possible to their original position.
All debris from the works was removed, and the site was cleaned before completion.
The investigation provided a clear understanding of the existing drainage layout and the condition of the stormwater system. From this information, we can recommend the most effective Drainage Rectification solution moving forward.
Why Drainage Investigations Matter
Stormwater problems can be frustrating because the cause isn’t always visible. Water might appear in one area, but the real issue could be several metres away underground.
A proper Stormwater Drainage Inspection and CCTV Drain Inspection allows plumbers to diagnose the root cause before starting major repairs.
This approach prevents unnecessary excavation and ensures that the final drainage solution addresses the real problem.
If you’re experiencing drainage issues around your property, an investigation is often the first step toward a permanent fix.
